When I straighten my hair the shorter layers stick out?

I've had layers in my hair for a while now but recently I had some quite short layers put in aswell. It looks really good but sometimes if I havn't washed and blow dryed my hair just before straightening the shorter layers stick out. How can I get them to be flatter??When I straighten my hair the shorter layers stick out?
