Unknown really. Even though the quanta or photons of energy are moving around at light speed, there are so many of them inside the Sun's core that they constantly throw each other off course by bouncing around against each other. So, they can't maintain a straight line path through to the surface to be emitted into space. Some estimates have put it at thousands and even millions of years. It boggles the mind, but I'll listen to the astrophysicists and solar astronomers--they know what they're doing.How many years does it take for heat generated in the sun's core to reach its outer layer, the photospere?
